How Kareena Kapoor Khan Approached Weight Loss After Taimur’s Birth

Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor Khan has long been admired for maintaining her fitness while balancing a demanding career and motherhood. Nearly nine years after the birth of her first child, Taimur Ali Khan, her post-pregnancy transformation remains a subject of public interest.

Kareena was notably open about her pregnancy and did not retreat from the public eye. She continued to be photographed by paparazzi during pregnancy and after giving birth, offering fans a glimpse of her gradual return to fitness.

What stood out was her approach. Rather than relying on extreme workouts or crash diets, Kareena focused on gradually losing the weight she had gained during pregnancy while prioritising nutrition and strength. Her goal, by her own account, was not simply to become thinner, but to regain fitness in a sustainable way.

Kareena’s Approach to Post-Pregnancy Weight Loss

Pregnancy naturally brings changes to a woman’s body, including weight gain. After childbirth, however, new mothers often face the additional demands of caring for a newborn, recovering physically and adjusting to a very different daily routine.

For that reason, experts generally caution against extreme dieting or abruptly cutting back on food after childbirth. Adequate nutrition remains important during postpartum recovery, particularly for women who are breastfeeding.

Kareena’s reported approach reflected this emphasis on balance. Instead of drastically restricting her food intake, she continued to eat a varied diet and gradually incorporated physical activity into her routine.

In an interview in 2017, Kareena said she had gained around 18 kilograms during pregnancy. Despite the weight gain, she did not completely give up foods she enjoyed. She reportedly continued to include rice and parathas with ghee in her meals.

Her philosophy was straightforward: severely restricting food was not the answer to losing weight.

The Role of Nutrition

Kareena continued working with nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, who has spoken publicly about the actor’s post-pregnancy diet.

According to Diwekar, Kareena’s approach was based on a conventional, balanced diet rather than extreme restrictions. Her meals included carbohydrates and fats as well as other essential nutrients.

The broader principle is particularly relevant during the postpartum period. A new mother needs adequate calories, protein, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats to support recovery and daily functioning. Women who are breastfeeding may also have additional nutritional requirements.

Rather than eliminating entire food groups, a balanced eating pattern can provide a more sustainable approach to managing weight after pregnancy.

From Yoga to Cardio and Strength Training

Fitness was another part of Kareena’s post-pregnancy routine.

The actor has long been associated with yoga and has continued to practise it as part of her fitness regimen. Following Taimur’s birth, however, reports about her training also highlighted more gym-based workouts.

Her routine included activities such as brisk walking on a treadmill, freehand exercises, cardio and strength-oriented training. Kettlebell exercises and rope-based workouts were also reportedly incorporated into her programme.

The emphasis was not on achieving an immediate transformation. Kareena had indicated that she wanted to lose the weight gained during pregnancy, but not overnight.

Why a Gradual Approach Matters

Post-pregnancy weight loss is not a race. Every woman’s recovery is different, and the amount of weight gained during pregnancy, physical recovery after childbirth, breastfeeding, sleep, diet and pre-pregnancy health can all influence the process.

Medical guidance is particularly important before resuming strenuous exercise after childbirth. The timing and intensity of physical activity should take into account the type of delivery, recovery status and any complications.

For new mothers, the priority should therefore be recovery, adequate nutrition and gradual return to physical activity rather than rapid weight loss.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s post-pregnancy journey has remained notable largely because it was presented as a gradual process rather than an overnight transformation. Her experience also highlights a broader message: maintaining a healthy routine after childbirth does not necessarily require abandoning favourite foods or following extreme diets.

Instead, sustainable nutrition, appropriate physical activity and consistency can form the foundation of a healthier postpartum routine—while recognising that every mother’s body and recovery journey is different.
